Compare Home Insurance with Easy Compare

When you’re a homeowner, knowing that both the building and contents are insured against damage provides valuable peace of mind.  You can choose between buildings and contents cover, or take both for the completely comprehensive option.

Buildings cover will provide insurance against damage to the structure of the home, which includes the roof, walls and windows, as well as permanent fixture, like a fitted kitchen or bathroom suite.  The exact terms of buildings cover can vary between providers, but it is most likely that the cover will come into force in the event of damage through fire, flood, subsidence, burst pipes, falling trees and theft.

Contents insurance covers against personal possessions within the home, and normally works on a new-for-old basis.  This means that any item damaged would be replaced with a new one.  However, some insurers will actually just cover the current value of an item if it over a certain age, such as 10 years.

You would need to confirm all items you want to cover, so making a detailed list before declaring them would be a good idea.  The cover would usually come into force in the event of theft, fire, storms, lightning, flooding or damaging water leakage, earthquakes and explosions.  This can vary, so check with the insurer for exact terms.

It is also important to note that tenants would be expected to take out their own contents insurance.  Buildings insurance would not be their responsibility, but their personal possessions would only be covered if a policy for those items is taken out.
